Paul Boyd

Paul Boyd is a freelance radio presenter. His  career started at Downtown Radio in 1976 when he presented & produced some shows from the age of sixteen. He did discos with Eddie West & DJ TC in the old Town n’ Country hotel, Newtownards, enjoyed discoing with Bee Dee’s Discos, and established his own roadshow with three dancers to tour Northern Ireland back in the late 70’s.

Paul was the founder of two charity bedside radio stations at Whiteabbey and Belfast City Hospitals in 1977 / 79, which won him a grant and the personal admiration of HRH Prince of Wales, when they met for an hour in London. On several occasions he joined Walter Love & Gloria Hunniford on BBC Radio Ulster, and once successfully did a 100-hour non-stop radio show to help fundraise towards a cardiac heart machine.

In 1980 he became a television cameraman at UTV were he’s been staff ever since, working firstly on Gloria Hunniford’s Good Evening Ulster nightly magazine programme, also on Counterpoint, Insight, UTV Live At Six with Eamonn Holmes, Sportscast with Jackie Fullerton, the Kelly Show for all of it’s seventeen year run, School Around The Corner. the UTV Live News, UTV Live Tonight with Paul Clark, and across a wide range of other varied television programmes.

In 2002 he qualified as a multi-camera TV director from Ravensbourne College, and in 2003 trained in professional radio presentation with BBC Radio 1 / Radio 2’s Bruno Brooks, while qualifying from the Radio Academy, London.

Since 2005 he regularly hosted two weekend late shows on U105 radio for a full ten year run, creating his unique Whizz The Wheel game of live musical roulette, while covering many shows for other presenters too, across a range of easy listening, local folk, music & sports programmes.

He spend time from 2008 voluntarily training young people in PA sound and lighting, to stage concerts at the Urban Soul project in Belfast for seven years, which in turn benefited the NI children’s hospice.

Paul has an absolute passion for both television and radio, loves the entire broadcasting industry, and has designed & built three radio studios and a small radio outside broadcast unit, in the past. He has a soundproof studio at home overlooking Belfast from the hills.

Paul married in 1994, loves driving his Z4 sports car when he can, and has two dogs called Archie & Rosko. He has a well stocked log cabin garden bar to the side of his house for entertaining guests… yet surprisingly he rarely drinks himself !

He spent his 21st birthday in hospital in a coma due to diabetes, and for 34 years was compelled to take six injections daily. He was one of the first people in Northern Ireland to be fitted with a hi tech diabetic insulin pump, which now let’s him lead a much better lifestyle. He persistently refuses to let any health issue stop him, as he’s a complete workaholic and constantly loves being busy. He hates holidays, and especially dislikes flying.

From 1984 he was a ‘hard news’ cameraman based in Belfast providing coverage for UTV, ITN & Channel 4 news, on call 24/7, before returning to live TV studio work.

He specialises flying Jimmy Jib cameras, and over the years UTV have at times hired him to BBC NI, RTE, and several independent broadcasters for music programmes & television commercials. He cares about people and is the Health & Safety rep for the broadcast union BECTU.

As a freelance radio jock in his spare time, he’s very much enjoying his first fresh adventure in to world of ‘live internet on-line radio’ with it’s world-wide audience appeal.  You can catch ‘THE PAUL BOYD RADIO SHOW’ from 8pm – 1opm, here on BigHitsRadio.uk.
