Three of the Best – The Communards

Written by on April 21, 2018

This Week Andy & Len’s three of the best is 80s electro-pop duo The Communards.

Formed in the mid 80s following Jimmy Somerville’s split from Bronski Beat, he collaborated with Richard Coles, a classically trained musician.

Most commonly known for cover version hits like “Don’t Leave Me This Way” and “Never Can Say Goodbye”, the group sparked political debate and controversy in the UK regarding lesbian and gay rights.

At the time Somerville was regularly accused of being a communist, the name Communards referring to the 1871 Paris Commune.

The Band only released two Albums, Communards self titled and Red in 1986 though both members embarked on successful solo careers. Richard Coles was ordained as a Church of England priest in 2005 and makes regular television and radio appearances including appearing regularly on Radio 2’s Pause for Thought, He’s been a contestant on Strictly Come Dancing and currently presents The Big Painting Challenge with Mariella Fostrup on BBC1.
