Three of the Best – Gerry Rafferty

Written by on April 7, 2018

This week Andy & Len’s Three of the Best is from the amazing Gerry Rafferty.

Singer / Songwriter Rafferty was born into working class roots in Paisley in 1947 where he learned both Irish and Scottish folk songs from his mother, though later on his musical influences included Bob Dylan and The Beatles.

Best known for the beautifully upbeat Baker Street, the wonderful ballad Right Down the Line and other great hits including Night Owl, City to City, Get it right next time, Royal Mile and Stuck in the Middle with you, a song probably best known as featuring in the Tarantino movie Reservoir Dogs.

Fame for Rafferty was always a bitter pill to swallow, in an interview with Colin Irwin in 1988 he said There’s a thin line between being a songwriter and a singer and being a personality… If you feel uncomfortable with it you shouldn’t do it. It’s not for me – there are too many inherent contradictions.”

Many of Rafferty’s songs tackle his long battle with Alcoholism and many articles on the singer discuss his spiraling problems.

Rafferty passed away in early 2011, one of our favourite positive obituaries was summarized in The Times “As well as being a singer of considerable talent who at one time had the pop world at his feet, Gerry Rafferty was also a consummate songwriter, blessed with sensitivity and an enviable melodic flair that at its best recalled Paul McCartney.”
